Is Odoo good for a small machine shop?
Odoo can run a machine shop, and its per-user price is low: about €20 to €45 per user per month on its pricing page, with one app free for unlimited users. The catch for a small job shop is the setup. Odoo's Manufacturing app is general purpose (MRP, MES, PLM, quality), so routes, work centers, job tracking and customer updates have to be configured, usually with a partner, and implementation isn't included in the plans. Tehdo is narrower and ready for job-shop work out of the box: $500 a month for the whole shop, setup included.
Where Odoo is strong
- Breadth. Accounting, CRM, inventory, purchasing, website and manufacturing in one system.
- Low per-user price, and one app free for unlimited users.
- Huge ecosystem of apps, partners and developers, and open source.
Where a small job shop struggles with it
- You build the shop yourself. Work centers, routings per customer part, how outside processing is tracked, what the floor sees: all configuration.
- Built around products and bills of material. Fine for a product company; extra work when every PO is a new customer part at a new revision.
- Customer status updates mean setting up the portal and deciding what customers can see.
- Implementation is extra and usually the largest cost.

Our honest take
If you have someone who enjoys setting up software and you want accounting in the same system, Odoo is a reasonable, cheap choice. If you want the shop running on your real orders this week and your buyers checking a link instead of calling, click around Tehdo's sample shop or start with your own orders.
